St Werburgh's Terrace
The careful refurbishment of a Victorian Terrace in Bristol, focussed on making the most of modest spaces. A palette of traditional materials creates a calming atmosphere, whilst moderating moisture within the building and minimising environmental impact.
This project is our own home and has been designed and built by my wife and I, with a view to using the house as a test-bed for ideas and minimising costs.
In the bathroom, UK made hemp-lime plaster is left exposed. A simply vanity unit with ash joinery contributes to a calming atmosphere within the space.
A headboard in the master bedroom creates a walk-in wardrobe for each of the occupants. The headboard is lined with hand-woven fabric, over which hand-made ceramic pendants lights are suspended. Constructed using off-the-self cabinets with bespoke doors and hand-made ceramic knobs, the walk-in wardrobes frees up the remaining bedroom space. With no need for bulky furniture, the sleeping area is spacious. The original floor boards are restored and painted a silky black, creating the sensation of floating when lying on the bed at night.
